The real estate profession offers one of the widest career selections in the business world today. Helping people buy and sell homes, office buildings, industrial property and corporation farmland, property management, land development, mortgage banking, urban planning, real estate counseling, appraisal and research are all aspects of a career in real estate.

Working in real estate allows for independence, a flexible work schedule and the unlimited earning potential that sales positions can offer. It is, however, definitely not a career for those who like the routine of a nine-to-five job. There are no "punch clocks," or an official "quitting time." Your phone can ring at any time of the day or night.

Successful people in real estate are goal-oriented, persevering, self-motivated and ambitious. They are also people who derive personal satisfaction from delivering the American Dream of Homeownership to families and individuals alike.

Real estate also offers you choice. For example, you can choose the environment in which to work, such as an affiliation with a large or small firm or whether to partner with a seller or a buyer. With more experience and upon passing of an additional exam, you can then choose to become a real estate broker. As a broker, you can own your own business and employ other salespeople.

The Kentucky Association of REALTORS® is the state's largest real estate professional organization, representing more than 8,500 members. The term REALTOR® is a registered and protected trademark. A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, a state association of REALTORS® and their local Board of REALTORS®. By joining the REALTOR® organization, a real estate professional has to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and its standards of professionalism, integrity and competence.

A career as a REALTOR® can be an exciting and rewarding choice, but it takes dedication.

Membership in the three-tier system of the REALTOR® organization is a professional distinction that enhances your ability to be successful real estate entrepreneurs. Any active real estate licensee (see licensing below) may apply for membership, however only those accepted as members may use the registered trademark term REALTOR®, an industry mark which symbolizes one's personal commitment to real estate as a career pursuit and sets you apart from the thousands of non-member real estate agents and brokers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

As a REALTOR®, you hold joint membership in a local REALTOR® association, the Kentucky Association of REALTORS® (KAR) and the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), and voluntarily agree to abide by the organization's strict code of ethics. Through an open membership policy known as Board of Choice, you may apply for membership through any one of the 27 local REALTORS® associations in Kentucky, regardless of geographic location.

Annual dues are paid directly to the local association, and include $98 for state REALTOR® membership (pro-rated monthly), and $120 for NAR membership (also pro-rated monthly), plus a $35 special assessment for the REALTOR® image advertising campaign. At the local level, membership dues vary by association, so refer to the local board contact information for more information.

Upon acceptance into KAR, you have the opportunity to attend membership meetings on the local level and participate in numerous professional development programs and networking activities on the state and national levels. At the Kentucky Association of REALTORS®, we're dedicated to promoting your business and career goals, and offer numerous programs and services designed to help real estate professionals prosper, both financially and intellectually.

Our primary membership benefits will keep you current on relevant issues and trends.

Membership in KAR also includes a large contingent of partners, whose businesses have interests in real estate and who are supportive of KAR and its REALTOR® members.

For general questions about REALTOR® membership requirements or KAR member benefits, please contact KAR Customer Service or call 859.263.7377 or toll-free at 800.264.2185.
