In the hopes of continuing the upward swing of the national real estate market, the recent expansion and extension of the home buyer tax credit has made more than two-thirds of current homeowners and nearly all first-time buyers eligible for the credit when they purchase a home.

In the hopes of continuing the upward swing of the national real estate market, the recent expansion and extension of the home buyer tax credit has made more than two-thirds of current homeowners and nearly all first-time buyers eligible for the credit when they purchase a home. The credit is part of the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009, a $24 billion economic stimulus bill that is envisioned to address the economic challenges facing our nation while also energizing the U.S. housing market.

The newly passed legislation does two things:
• Extends the First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit of up to $8,000 to first-time home buyers until April 30, 2010.
• Expands the credit to grant up to $6,500 credit to current home owners purchasing a new or existing home between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010.

For homes purchased between January 1, 2009 and November 6, 2009, the qualifications for the tax credit may vary. If you have specific questions or need additional information, please contact a tax professional or the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040.
